Peanuts are grown in Canada.
 |
While
peanuts have been grown in the U.S.A. for sometime, they
were introduced to Canadian soil in 1982. Peanuts are only
grown in the southerly
part of the Province of Ontario. With the decline in tobacco consumption in
the 1980's and 1990's, Norfolk County farmers searched
for an alternate cash crop to utilize their expertise and
considerable existing capital investment. The County
possesses the right combination of sandy soil and
temperate climate to
produce a high quality crop. | |

Peanuts grow underground!
 |
The peanut is not a true nut. It is actually a
legume. In Ontario, it must be planted in early to mid-May
in a light, well drained sandy to sandy-loam soil. Kernal
Peanuts is the largest grower of peanuts in Canada.

Growing.
 |
Its'
preferred growing environment is hot and dry (a minimum of
3000 corn heat units), and requires little, if any,
fertilization due to its unique ability to "fix"
its' own nitrogen requirements.
The 18" leafy plant produces small
yellow flowers. After pollination a small shoot forms at
the base of each flower and pushes into the soil. The
process is called "pegging" and continues for
most of the season. The "peg"
develops into a mature peanut pod by season's end. At
maturity, a plant will have about 20-25 pods.

Harvesting.
 |
Ontario peanuts are harvested in mid-September to late
October using a special Canadian-designed and built
once-over harvester. This special harvester digs and
combines in one operation, considerably reducing
harvesting time. During the harvest, some of the
"green" peanuts are sold for the fresh market.

Processing.
 |
There are usually three or more small kernels to the Valencia pod.
The peanuts are cleaned, and washed. Then the peanuts are dried in bulk
kilns to 10% moisture and stored.
After sorting by size and quality, they are ready for
marketing or for further processing. Valencias are very sweet and
are normally roasted.
